BayRay Job Description: Director and Group Leaders of Discovery Biology
Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) is a recently created life-science research organization by the Shenzhen municipal government and PKU Shenzhen. SZBL thrives to build an academic powerhouse for life sciences and biomedical engineering in southern China by creating advanced cross-discipline institutes that address major challenges in life sciences and to drive leading-edge discoveries in frontier and applied areas of bio-medicine. Through its 12 subordinate research institutes SZBL enables basic & translational research, technology development and clinical trials to accelerate the creation of biomedical industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
BayRay Innovation Center is spearheading translational efforts at SZBL to bridge the gap between cutting edge scientific discoveries from academia and commercialization. BayRay develops innovative technologies and breakthrough therapeutics for diseases with great unmet medical need. Centered around its core strength in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, BayRay is co-investing into various enabling platforms and has embarked on several active drug discovery programs, either alone or in partnership with pharma companies.
BayRay is establishing a discovery biology function to support on-going technology development and early drug discovery programs as well as to initiate new R&D programs. We look for highly talented and motivated biologists with disease area expertise to fill in a number positions covering preclinical studies ranging from cell biology and assay development to in vivo pharmacology studies. Successful candidates will work closely with other functions in BayRay and external partners to build core internal capabilities as well as access external services (e.g. CROs).
Director, Discovery Biology:
•Responsibilities:
oReport to the CEO and server as a member of BayRay management team.
oEstablish and lead the Discovery Biology function and be responsible for the design, development, and execution of in vitro and in vivo assays to enable all BayRay programs from early discovery to IND filing in a fast-paced manner.
oProvide strategic and scientific leadership to support BayRay becoming a leading technology innovation and drug discovery organization.
oContribute to cross-functional team efforts in proposing, evaluating, and implementing new discovery programs based on novel biology ideas in areas of unmet medical needs.
oParticipate efforts to establishing breakthrough technologies that push the boundaries in complex cell/tissue-based assays and superior translational in vivo models
oInterpret, summarize, and present research findings to key stakeholders (e.g. external partners, SZBL leadership, and investors) and scientific meetings.
oDevelop budget and staff projects for Discovery Biology to support continued growth of BayRay.
•Qualifications:
oPhD in life or medical sciences; post-doc experience preferred.
o12+ years of drug discovery and development hands-on and leadership experiences with demonstrated success in a pharma or biotech setting.
oExpertise in assay development, mode of action (MOA) elucidation, and in vitro/in vivo pharmacology in multiple therapeutic areas, preferred experience in oncology, immunology, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, rare diseases, virology.
oDeep understanding of preclinical PK/PD/efficacy relationships; good understanding of preclinical and clinical biomarker discovery and development.
oCollaborative and team-oriented mindset with strong verbal and written communication skills.
oDemonstrated creativity and novel approaches to solving scientific problems in a fast-paced environment characterized by rigorous science and innovative thinking.
oSuccessful track record in managing team or projects in industry or academic labs.
oExtensive experience in engaging and managing external collaborations (academic, biotech/pharma or CRO).
Group Leaders, Discovery Biology (multiple positions available):
•Responsibilities:
oReport to the Director of Discovery biology
oLead a small team of PhD/MS/BS scientists to build core capabilities in the Discovery Biology function, ranging from cell biology/bioassay, to in vivo pharmacology.
oLead efforts in the design, development, and execution of in vitro and in vivo assays to enable all BayRay programs from early discovery to IND filing in a fast-paced manner.
oProvide biology and disease area expertise to support BayRay becoming a leading technology innovation and drug discovery organization.
oParticipate cross-functional team efforts in proposing, evaluating, and implementing new discovery programs based on novel biology ideas in areas of unmet medical needs.
oInterpret, summarize, and present research findings to project teams and BayRay management.
oManage external collaborations to enhance capabilities and capacities of the Discovery Biology function.
•Qualifications:
oPhD in life or medical sciences; post-doc experience preferred.
o6+ years of drug discovery and development experiences with demonstrated success.
oStrong expertise and hands-on experiences in some of the following aspects: functional cell-based signaling assays in recombinant and primary cells, high throughput assay development and screening (CRSPR, small molecule and antibody libraries), high content imaging and flow cytometry, automated liquid handling and related data analysis, MOA study, and in vitro/in vivo pharmacology.
oUnderstanding of preclinical PK/PD/efficacy relationships as well as preclinical and clinical biomarker discovery and development.
oAbility to critically analyze and interpret data, timely document and communicate results with project teams and provide expert opinions for future actions
oCollaborative and team-oriented mindset with strong verbal and written communication skills.
oSuccessful track record in managing research teams.
oExperience in engaging and managing external collaborations (academic, biotech/pharma or CRO).
